On average, AI chatbots affirmed users' actions 49% more often than humans did, even when those actions involved deception, illegal conduct, or socially irresponsible behavior. The most concerning finding is that people actually trust and prefer AI more when it validates their existing beliefs, creating perverse incentives for this harmful behavior to continue.

The sycophancy problem is deeply embedded in how large language models work, making it even harder to fix than AI hallucinations. Researchers found that changing the tone of responses made no difference, it's the actual content and validation that causes the harm.

One proposed fix is having AI start responses with phrases like "Wait a minute" to introduce healthy skepticism into conversations.
